3 of the Best Takeaways from AZ SHRM 2015

AZ SHRM is over. If you’re like us, you spent the weekend going over notes, transcribing recordings and searching all things #AZSHRM on social media. If you still can’t narrow down your favorite takeaways from three jam-packed days of HR goodness, we’re here to help. We painstakingly reviewed, ranked and finally culled our favorite learnings from AZ SHRM.

Create Signature HR Stories

Serial social entrepreneur, Miki Agrawal, discussed how the WWAVE method enables us to better understand various roles within our organization. When trying to gain buy-in from others (i.e.: recruiting top talent to work for you), consider the following specifics:

  • Who: Identify key players
  • Where: Specific time and place
  • Adversity: The challenge was/is
  • Victory: How to overcome the challenge
  • Emotional Context: For example: “This is why I love working at (organization name)”

We can use this method regularly to position ourselves as a high-level business partners among our internal customers and better align the company’s mission and culture with talent acquisition efforts.

Recruiting Leadership

Zach Hubbell showed us how to stand out from the 99 percent. By identifying the two major forms of business strategy - Cost Leadership and Differentiation - and how they play into the recruiting strategy, we can further examine how our employer brand resonates with our intended audience. A cost leadership strategy may lead to candidates chasing paychecks; whereas a differentiation strategy creates value, enhances brand perceptions and gives candidates a clear reason to work for you.

New Rules of the Workplace

Reality-based leadership calls for a new outlook on creating workplace solutions. More specifically, an understanding that “our circumstances aren't the reason we can't succeed, they're the reality in which you must succeed,” according to Keynote Speaker Cy Wakeman. For HR professionals, this means ditching the drama and wholeheartedly committing to not giving-in to excuses, finding solutions and setting expectations to deliver results and support business missions and strategies.

From identifying new methods for aligning HR practices with business goals to learning how to implement strategic partnerships to drive our recruiting efforts, we’re still awe-struck with AZSHRM inspiration. We know there are many more key learnings from the conference, follow us on Facebook and tell us about your favorite AZSHRM moments!
